Our Bachelor of Science (BS) in Emergency Management program focuses on knowledge and skill development in areas such as emergency, hazard, and disaster mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery. To help equip you for the challenges today’s emergency responders and managers encounter, our program examines best practices for emergency responses and preparedness by individuals and organizations at all levels of government. Mission

The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management program is to provide students with a strong understanding of emergency, hazard, and disaster mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery. With the knowledge and understanding of how individuals and organizations at all levels of government should respond during emergencies, students will work to be prepared to effectively impact challenges encountered by today’s emergency responders and managers. Moreover, the implications and impact of various technological advances in emergency management will be evaluated and integrated.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates completing the Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management program will accomplish the following outcomes:

  1. Distinguish between emergency management functions, organizations, and activities.
  2. Interpret the national, state, and local response framework, operation plans, and response strategies.
  3. Identify actions to reduce or eliminate risk to people and property from hazards and their effects including long-term solutions for reducing risk.
  4. Critically evaluate emergency management research methods, empirical data, and the significance and importance of research reports.
  5. Apply and evaluate the legal environment and disaster laws, legal issues, and concerns related to emergency management and response.
  6. Utilize various technological advances in emergency management, including GIS, emergency mapping, and incident management systems.
  7. Demonstrate effective writing, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

Admission Requirements

All students must minimally meet the requirements for general admission to South College. General admission to South College does not guarantee admission to the program. Program admission is not granted until a student has successfully completed 45 hours in the major curriculum at South College, earning a minimum grade of “C” in all major courses.

What is the tuition for South College?

Tuition and fees for South College students vary by program, and tuition rates are tiered based on the number of credits taken each quarter. For example, in our undergraduate programs, students taking 10-20 credits per quarter are charged one quarterly tuition rate based on their program, while students in the same program taking 1-5 or 6-9 credits are charged different tuition rates. Our tuition rates are designed such that South College students who take a high number of credits per quarter may be able to complete their program at a lower total cost than students who take fewer credits per quarter. South College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award degrees at the doctorate, educational specialist, master’s, baccalaureate, and associate levels, as well as certificates. Does South College accept Transfer Students?

Yes! Credit for transfer work may be given if it was taken at an accredited collegiate institution, if it is equivalent to courses offered at South College, and if it carries a grade of C or better. Any coursework taken over seven years ago may be denied transfer credit if the material is outdated. Policies for the acceptance of any graduate level transfer credit are determined by the associated program faculty within guidelines determined by the institution.
