More than 10 current Hillcrest Healthcare employees are enrolled in the Certificate in Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program at South College. The healthcare company is seeking to attract new hires with the education incentive.

Employees who want to become CNAs can receive training at The Mason Center, Hillcrest Healthcare’s nonprofit education facility. South College reopens Asheville campus following Hurricane Helene

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 16, 2024

South College has reopened its Asheville campus after Western North Carolina (WNC) was devastated by flooding and storm damage due to Hurricane Helene and is continuing donation efforts across South College’s educational footprint

With the restoration of services for power, water and internet, the campus reopened Oct.14 to faculty and staff with students also having access to the building. In-person classes resumed on Wednesday, Oct. 16, for undergraduate students and Monday, Oct. 21, for the current Physician Assistant (PA) Studies graduate students.

“Being able to welcome everyone back to campus is a big step forward,” South College Asheville President Dr. Danielle Kwasnik said. “We are immensely grateful to everyone involved in the restoration of our city for the effort and work that has been done and is still being done to bring some sense of normalcy back to our community. The relief efforts will continue, and South College will be a part of that recovery.

“The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. In the days immediately following the storm, our staff initiated outreach efforts to ensure that all faculty, staff and students were accounted for. Our Student Services department is fully committed to addressing the individual needs of those affected, including students who have been displaced due to condemned off-campus housing or who have lost vehicles. I am truly humbled to witness our campus community come together in such a remarkable way to support one another”.

Asheville and WNC bore the brunt of the storm on Sept. 26 with overwhelming flooding and unprecedented destruction with some towns nearly wiped out. The need for assistance for the area is ongoing and long-term.

Donations efforts at our other campuses included the delivery of items such as water, diapers, formula, gloves for debris cleanup, pet food and cleaning supplies. These items are being distributed to faculty, staff and students.

In addition to Asheville, South College has campuses in Knoxville and Nashville, Tennessee; Atlanta, Georgia; Indianapolis, Indiana; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Orlando, Florida, as well as Online and Competency-Based Education.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 23, 2024

South College has announced the launch of its Educational Specialist (EdS) degree, which will be available through a Competency-Based Education (CBE) delivery. Recent graduates of the South College Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program who took the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) in Tennessee in 2023 earned a 99.4% pass rate on their first attempt.

“The dedication of the students, faculty and staff in the South College BSN program is evident in many ways, and we celebrate with the 165 individuals who are now South College graduates and registered nurses in Tennessee,” South College Chancellor Steve South said. “We’re proud to work with our partners to help prepare healthcare professionals, especially in disciplines where they’re needed most.”

NEWS RELEASE

South College Atlanta Associate of Science in Physical Therapist Assistant program earns Candidate for Accreditation status

The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) has granted the Associate of Science in Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at South College Atlanta Candidate for Accreditation status.

“We are delighted that the PTA program has earned Candidate for Accreditation status from CAPTE and remain committed to fulfilling obligations to continue the accreditation process,” said Josh Huffaker, president of the Atlanta campus. “Considering the need for qualified healthcare professionals, our focus is bringing together great support, curriculum, faculty and resources to help students gain the skills they need to be PTA practitioners and prepare them for future endeavors.”

CAPTE is an accrediting agency for physical therapist and physical therapist assistant programs. A letter from the commission indicates that its Oct. 31, 2023, decision was based on the program’s demonstration toward achieving compliance with both the accreditation standards and required elements. South College Atlanta will pursue additional levels of accreditation, which will include a self-study report and site visit by the commission in spring 2025.

The PTA program offers both classroom and clinical training for students to develop skills to assist physical therapists in delivering treatment plans that help patients regain function, strength and control. It covers diverse aspects of physical therapy, including sports medicine, pediatrics, acute care, outpatient orthopedics, rehabilitation, extended care and assisted living. The campus also has a newly renovated physical therapy lab that will be utilized by the PTA program.

South College offers additional programs to continue in physical therapy education, including the Bachelor of Science in Health Science (Pre-Physical Therapy) and Doctor of Physical Therapy.

Enrollment is now open for interested students. For more information about South College, including prerequisite and admissions information for the PTA Atlanta program, visit south.edu
